Bacon Academy was looking forward to the challenge of playing their league's top rated team when the Waterford Lancers came to town on May 12th.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but with just 3 seconds left in the first quarter, Waterford gave a glimpse of things to come when they scored with time running out making it a 4-1 game. After the Bobcats dominated the first, the 2nd quarter belonged to Waterford as they outscored Bacon 5-2 to bring the game even at 6-6 going into the half.
The teams traded goals throughout the third, and the quarter ended in a 9-9 tie. Waterford took their first lead of the game early in the 4th, 10-9, but Bacon's Dylan Heald fired a perfect pass across the crease that Casey Hart quickly directed into the net to tie the game at 10. Waterford scored again to go ahead 11-10. With just over 4 minutes left, Tyler Christianson found Ryan LoVetere who fired a shot passed the Lancers goalie and the game was once again even at 11 each. With no goals scored in the final 4 minutes of regulation, the teams headed to the 4 minute sudden death OT session.
In overtime, each offense took turns launching near miss shots, but with only 6 ticks left on the clock, Waterford got off a shot that found its way into the Bacon goal. The Lancers handed the Bobcats just their 2nd loss of the year, securing Waterford's spot on top of the division.
Tyler Christianson had 3 goals and 2 assists and Ethan Cuadro had 2 goals and 3 assists to lead the Bacon offense. Tony Tyler and Casey Hart each scored 2 goals and Noah Mocksfield and Ryan LoVetere each hit the back of the net for BA. Dylan Heald continues to be the team's primary playmaker, adding 3 more assists, and Matthew Voiland also dished out an assist. Kyle Denker made 7 saves in goal for BA. Logan Bowdish led Waterford with 4 goals.
The Bobcats get another shot at the top team as they travel to Waterford on May 16th for the re-match.
