Bacon Academy Boys Lacrosse opened their 2017 season on a cool, wet April Tuesday in Norwich. The Bobcats broke out to a 6-2 advantage over the Wildcats by the half, but failed to hold on to that lead, as NFA scored three goals in the third quarter to pull within one. Early in the 4th quarter, NFA's Chris Ladyga tied it at 6-6 with 10 minutes, 46 seconds left to play. Tyler Christianson put Bacon back on top off a pass from Bobby Parker with 8:11 to play, making the score 7-6.
NFA waited until the last few seconds to force overtime. Bacon Academy coach Brian Martin had warned his team in a timeout with 11 seconds to play to watch NFA’s Jaedon Brown and Ladyga. But Brown took the ball off the timeout and went right to the net. “He really wanted to take it,” NFA coach Nate Wheeler said. Brown scored his second goal of the game, pushing it under goalie Kyle Denker with five seconds left to tie it up at 7-7.
One minute into overtime, Freshman left-hander Ethan Cuadro took a pass from fellow 9th Grader Casey Hart and spied a little room over the right shoulder of Norwich Free Academy keeper Alex Medeiros. Showing little apprehension, Cuadro drew the stick back and let the ball fly. It found the back of the net for his second goal of the game and gave the Bobcats an 8-7 win over NFA.
“I threw my stick in the air, got bear-hugged and piled on (by his teammates). I just couldn’t believe it went in. It was insane,” Cuadro said. “He may remember that forever,” Martin said. “He has a bright future. We have younger kids who are on the field because we have faith in them. When they get the ball on their stick, they can get the job done.”
Along with Cuadro and Hart, other Freshmen who contributed included Ryan LoVetere, who scored a goal and Goalie Kyle Denker, who recorded 11 Saves while gaining his first Varsity win.
Bobby Parker dished out 2 assists and teamed with Chris Consiglio to disrupt the NFA transition game and cause several turnovers. Dylan Heald scored 2 goals and an assist, Tony Tyler tallied a goal and an assist and Noah Mocksfield added a goal for Bacon. Brian Egan, Eli Healy, Julian Lindo, Josh Atchison, Jonah McNaughton and Sean Newton limited NFA's offensive opportunities and played solid defense in the win.
